Former Ithica Gin member and Georgia native Willem Maker follows up his solo debut, Stars Fell On, with an electrifying set of innovative blues on the Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records release, New Moon Hand.
With a Tom Waits-like delivery, Maker lures the listener in on the snaking, slow burning workouts, "White Ladye" and "Rain On a Shinin." Recorded at the Foxhole, the Beech House and Electraphonic Recording in Georgia, Nashiville and Memphis, New Moon Hand has a tight, unifying feel on the rockers "Hex Blues," "Black Beach Boogie" and ballads, "Saints Weep Wine" and "The Greatest Hit."
Maker receives ample support from Jim Dickinson on piano and organ, Cedric Burnside on drums and Alvin Youngblood Hart on guitar. Produced by Maker and Scott Bomar, New Moon Hand is a blistering revelation of the power and intimacy of well honed compositions taken from life’s difficulties, set to expanding improvisation inside of the folk and blues tradition.
New Moon Hand is out now on Fat Possum Records.
