Tom Principato : Raising the Roof!

A forty year veteran of the Washington, D.C. music establishment, Tom Principato knows a thing or two about what works when it comes to gut-busting blues guitar workouts. tom_principato_band_raising_the_roof.jpg

Principato and his backing band of John Perry on bass, Joe Wells on drums and Josh Howell on percussion take blues, jazz and Latin music, and serve it up with a twist on their disc, Raising the Roof! Writing a majority of the songs himself, Principato leans on his gravelly delivery to augment songs about Friday night fish fry’s, good love gone bad, and the redeeming presence of good funk deep in the heart of the night.

A few covers, notably the organ-grinding pulse of Jimmy Smith’s "8 Counts For Rita" and the relaxed backbeat strut of J.J. Cale’s "Lies," stand out. Principato’s guitar shreds throughout, with Perry and Well’s tight rhythmic shuffle pushing Raising the Roof!’s fluid, angular modulations in differing directions, from the blues of "In the Middle of the Night" to the organic improvisations of "Bo Bo’s Groove."

A worthy follow up to 2005’s Guitar Gumbo, Raising the Roof! is sure to earn the Tom Principato Band a new legion of admirers.

Raising the Roof! is out now on Powerhouse Records.
