High Sierra 2012: A picture is worth a thousand words

Since 1991, fans have been descended upon Northern California for a blend of music from the masters of the craft. Over the years, much has changed, especially in regards to the caliber/recognition factor of billed acts. (Year one was headlined by The Youngbloods’ Jesse Colin Young)

These days, the bill boasts such names as Bob Weir & Ratdog and Gov’t Mule (2008), John Butler and Umphrey’s McGee (2009), Widespread Panic and The Black Crowes (2010), My Morning Jacket and Ween (2011).

2012 brought out headliners in the form of Ben Harper, STS9, Railroad Earth and Galactic, but just as the case has been since 2009, the festival was dominated by sit-ins from proud California darlings like the Bluhms (Nicki & Tim), ALO, Tea Leaf Green as well (the very California-minded) Surprise Me Mr. Davis brethren, Marco Benevento and Nathan Moore.

The best part is that in spite of the numerous changes, the vibe amongst attendees and artists alike remains constant.  And in 2012, it reigned high above all else as the clear highlight, the thing that year in and out turns virgin travelers to the beauteous mountain range into recidivists by the end of the first night.
