Bombadil: Metrics of Affection

bombadil-metrics-of-affectionMuch of the narrative about Bombadil lately has focused on the band’s return after a forced hiatus due to nerve damage in bassist Daniel Michalak’s hands.  While that is part of the band’s story, if one focuses on that they miss the truly important narrative of Bombadil.  Since they first burst into the musical universe out of Duke University (via a semester abroad in Bolivia) they have continually released great, quirky albums that have flown under the radar, yet can stand shoulder to shoulder with the year’s best albums.  Their latest release, Metrics of Affection, continues that trend.

Metrics of Affection is an addictive spin on folksy-Americana, Piedmont blues, and rocking gypsy rag-time.  It is built upon simple guitar lines, subtle hints of banjo, classically-themed piano melodies, and drum patterns that emit power in their simplicity.  Starting with the album’s opening track, “Angeline,” in which the band sounds like it is harmonizing with the ghost of Kate Bush, Bombadil crafts an album that sings of deep thoughts on life and love and relationships.  Each song is wrapped up snugly with simple word-play that hides the true meaning and requires the listener to peel back each layer of the song to reveal the elusive soul of each tune.  Or maybe as they sing, in what could be the album’s standout track, “Escalators,” “we’re just out of toilet paper again” and that is all they mean and there is no broader, profound truth to be found in the lyrics. Either way that is the beauty and genius of Bombadil’s music, their ability to create such complex musical beauty out of such a simple sound.

Halloween: What are YOU wearing?

By: Tim Newby

Halloween has long evolved from its beginnings (a celebration of the Celtic New Year or as the day before All Saints) into a candy-filled costumed extravaganza that finds kids salivating for bag after candy-filled bag with little thought of thehistory and traditions associated with the day.

Similarly the live music world has co-opted Halloween as a chance for bands to try on another’s music, by simply adding a couple of covers to their set or jumping in with two feet and attempting to cover an entire album.  Today, Halloween may only trail New Years Eve as the most important must-see event of the year.

2009 promises to be big with the return of Phish at their Festival 8 and the heavily hyped buildup to the album they will wear this year, Gov’t Mule’s Rolling Stones-inspired plans, moe.’s fan chosen setlist and much, much more.

With that in mind, Honest Tune asked some of our favorite musicians what it is about Halloween and the shows and music associated with it that makes it such a special occasion.

Bombadil: Strangely Addictive

bombadil1.jpgLast November as the first snow of winter touched down outside, I was huddled upstairs at No Way Joses, a small bar in Baltimore, with Bryan Rahija (guitar), Daniel Michalak (bass), James Phillips (drums), and Stuart Robinson (keys) from Bombadil.  The four road-weary musicians from North Carolina, who had traveled from Pennsylvania during the day and spent the last thirty minutes navigating their way through the construction clogged streets of Federal Hill, were clearly enjoying the wintery blanket that was being lain down on the city streets.  I mentioned to them that this was the first snow of the winter in Baltimore, and guitarist Rahija seemed to light up at the thought.  He would later remark during their show that evening, at the intimately small Baltimore Chop, how our conversation about the snow was so comforting, because if he was back home in North Carolina this might have been the only snow of the year.
