Suwannee Springfest :A Tradition Like No Other

In an uncertain world there are few things you can count on, the changing of the seasons being one and an amazing array of music at the Suwannee Springfest down in Live Oak, Florida, March 20th-23rd. The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park was founded as a home for bluegrass, and though it has grown far beyond it’s original intent, it’s never lost sight of it’s heritage. Legends and nervous first timers alike have taken the legendary amphitheater stage to the delight of audiences young and old. The majestic cypress trees stand reverent, as a mix of traditional and modern string music blends into a seamless whole…four days of music and the some of the most gorgeous camping in the country.

It’s a family affair at the top of the bill, with The Avett Brothers, The Punch Brothers and Del McCoury and his band, which include his talented sons Robbie and Ronnie. Perennial park favorites Donna The Buffalo, The Duhks and Jim Lauderdale bring a sense of continuity and community to the proceedings, while Jason Isbell and the Southern Soul Assembly (Featuring J.J. Grey and Anders Osborne) bring a little rock to the proceedings. Rising stars Floodwood, Town Mountain and Rumpke Mountain Boys take their first crack at the stages of the park, while Sam Bush and Greensky Bluegrass return to the scene of some of their most epic past sets to write a new chapter in the legend of the park.

Springfest has an incredible line up of bands, certainly, but as mentioned, the park itself and it’s traditions are a major part of the experience. Around the main camping areas communal fires are stoked and the players who by day grace the stage wander the night, seeking new and familiar faces alike to share in a good old fashioned picking party. It’s a regular sight to see fans with their own instruments standing shoulder to should next to their idols, sharing the joy of song, and even a bottle or two as the night stretches on toward daybreak. An entire generation has grown with the park, as children become adults and have families of their own, bringing their little ones back down to Florida to experience the magic and wonder they felt themselves. With so little in the world you can truly depend on, it’s nice to know that come spring, The gates of the Suwannee will open wide and the music will once again soar through the day and long into the night.
