Phish 3.0 launches at the “Mothership”

Opening with fan-favorite and long requested "Fluffhead" (last played 9/28/00), Phish played their first show in over four years at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA last night.  The band played a 28 song show that focused more on their earlier mult-part compositions ("Divided Sky", "You Enjoy Myself", "Oh Kee Pa Ceremony"), as opposed to the more open-ended jamming they had relied on in recent years.

They debuted a new song, "Backwards Down the Number Line", to open the 2nd set.  The song will presumably be part of the upcoming recording sessions Phish said they will start when the Hampton run is over.

The night ended with a three-song encore, "Grind" (making only its second apperance ever and sung acapella), "Bouncing Around the Room", and a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Lovin' Cup".

With the wholly appropriate line, "it took a long time to get back on the train" Phish opened up night two of their Hampton comeback shows with "Back on the Train".  Again focusing on more complex compositions as opposed to lengthy jams, night two saw the band trot out a 26 song show capped by a cover of The Beatles "A Day in the Life" as an encore.

The night also featured the Phish debut of "Beauty of a Broken Heart" a tune from Page McConnell's 2007 solo album, that seems to open the door of possibility of Phish digging into their respective solo projects for new material to bring to the stage.
