Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, 8/12/11-8/14/11

Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival
Golden Gate Park
San Francisco, CA
August 12-14, 2011

The fourth annual Outside Lands Music, Food, Wine and Art Festival took place August 12-14, 2011 in the beautiful Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Unique in that this fest is held right smack dab in the middle of a major metropolitan city, festival goers were treated to some unseasonably sunny and warm weather on two of the days with Friday being the typical foggy “SF Summer” one. Music of all types highlighted the festival: from rock, techno, indie, folk, jambands, funk to everything in between. A look at the headliners alone (including Phish, Muse, Arcade Fire, Erykah Badu, Deadmau5 and Girl Talk) is demonstrative of the diversity that brought in people from all musical walks of life.
This festival is also unique because it is a foodie heaven. Not content with your usual festie Flaming Wok, hamburgers and hot dogs? Well. Outside Lands ensures that all palates are accommodated with gourmet food trucks and local restaurants that offered some tasty regional choices to diners. Wine Lands — a section of the fest devoted to even the most discerning connoisseurs — poured California vintages including Les Claypool’s delicious Purple Pachyderm Pinot Noir.
Not stopping with wine and food, the festival also did its part to ensure that brains were fed as well, with green energy, political and environmentally conscious nonprofits, a solar powered stage, and massive recycling programs and Ecolands education sprinkled across the grounds.
Lastly, although the event pulls people from across the country and beyond, it has not lost sight of the rich social history of its great host city. The Barbary honored San Francisco’s colorful past by presenting vaudeville acts as well as stand up comedians and magicians.
With live mural art, a dance dome, a sports lounge, a game arcade, a farmer’s market with fresh produce and a fun-house area in the woods (not to mention one of the greatest lineups of the summer) gave Outside Lands something different for everyone to enjoy.
