Dark Leaves, the eighth album from Philadelphia’s matt pond PA, stays true to the blueprint mapped out previously; simple, light and lush melodies with a spritely, jangly guitar to deliver a bit of bounce. But while it can at times be a comforting sound, it seems to lack depth, existing only on the surface.
There are moments of real beauty in the album opening “Starting” or the similar sounding “Speck.” And therein lies the major flaw with Dark Leaves; those all-too similar, lush melodies that can be warm and comforting upon first listen, but that quickly meld into one long non-stop tune, completely undistinguishable from one song to the next. These traits make Dark Leaves best as atmospheric background noise.
Dark Leaves is out now on Attitude Records.
