John Scofield : A Moment’s Peace

john_scofield_moments_peace.jpg For fans of jazz guitar, John Scofield needs no introduction, but for everyone else let’s just say the man has jammed with the greats (Baker, Mingus, Miles, Metheny), marked time with modern day champions like Medeski, Martin and Wood, and has more than left his own mark in the process. On A Moment’s Peace, he – along with Brian Blade on drums, Scott Colley on bass, and Larry Goldings on keys – demonstrates his extremely fluid playing and otherworldly sense of melody with a 12-cut collection of relaxing and supremely pleasing instrumental ballads. The band follows him effortlessly through readings of old school classics such as “I Love You Porgy,” standards like “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” and a superb interpretation of The Beatle’s “I Will.” For listeners skeptical of jazz, but willing to give it a try, here’s your shot. Scofield brings buckets of tone and mood, while retaining enough grit to hold your interest. Turn it on, kick back and let your head drift. A Moment’s Peace is out now Decca Records
