Jimmy Leslie : Surfin’ the Swamp

Surfin’ the Swamp, the latest release from San Francisco-based guitar slinger Jimmy Leslie, is a unique collection of original material that spans a multitude of American influences. The album’s rhythms – recorded with Galactic’s drummer Stanton Moore and bassist Robert Mercurio at the band’s studio in New Orleans – feature thick, swampy grooves associated with New Orleans funk, creating an intriguing compliment to Leslie’s classic rock guitar riffs.

The songs on Surfin’ the Swamp showcase Leslie’s depth and range as a songwriter. At times, his material can be melancholy pop, as heard on “Sidewalk Diamond,” other times he is downright brooding, as on “Southern Line.” The highlight of the collection comes on “Wash it Out,” an outright funk epic that would fit perfectly on any Funky Meters album, and showcases the finest licks Leslie has to offer.

If you are longing for a healthy does of New Orleans voodoo, yet don’t want to be without those classic guitar riffs, then Surfin’ the Swamp is definitely a disc worthy of adding to your collection.

Surfin’ the Swamp is out now on Concurrent Records.
