Great songs of heartbreak and longing are not written by the Justin Biebers and Taylor Swifts of the world. They come from singer-songwriters like Chris Stamey, who, at nearly 60 years old, has lived a life full of the experiences that forge such tunes. A founding member of the great band The dB”s, Stamey”s latest, Lovesick Blues, shows that not only is he still at the top of his game writing-wise, but his voice is still as fresh and flawless as it was over 30 years ago. This is a guy who has always been a great writer and performer, and with this record, he shows that he still has something to say.
Lovesick Blues is his first full length release in almost eight years, and let”s hope it”s not another eight until his next one. Songs like “Skin,†“Astronomy†and the title track are flawless pop songs. But it”s the track “You n Me n XTC†that should be blaring out of every radio in the nation. In fact, Stamey was able to get help on this album from Andy Partridge, the voice and mastermind behind XTC.
This old dog shows he still has plenty of new tricks and great songs up his sleeve.
Lovesick Blues is out now on Yep Roc Records.
