Catskill Chill Line Up Announcement

Catskill Chill Music Festival has announced the line-up for “A Farewell to Minglewood” which will take place September 18-20, 2015, in Hancock, New York. The Chillfam will come together for one last celebration at the much-loved Camp Minglewood before the event moves to a new home in 2016.

At the top of this year’s artist line-up is Lotus, Zappa Plays Zappa, Lettuce, Electron, The Motet, Dopapod, Kung Fu, Twiddle, Break Science, Turkuaz, The Werks, Particle & Fam, and George Porter Jr. & The Runnin’ Pardners. The festival’s headliner will be announced on Monday, June 8.

As is tradition, the Chill will feature a number of tribute sets, which are always fan favorites during the weekend. Dopapod and Turkuaz will team up for Dopakuaz plays Studio 54, Twiddle offers up their electric take on Grateful Dead tunes, and the Chillfam All-Stars will perform a Herbie Hancock Tribute, while Shwizz and FiKus join forces for ShwiKus plays the ‘80s.

Particle, the only band that has performed at every Chill since its inception, will have the honor of closing out the weekend at Camp Minglewood, bringing an all-star cast of Chillfam guest performers on stage with them for the celebration.

While the performance schedule alone is reason enough to attend this annual event, it is the intimacy and unique grounds that make Catskill Chill one of the most highly anticipated festivals of the season and this year is expected to sell out. With a limited capacity, no campsite is more than a few minutes walk to the stages and anyone can make their way up to the front for their favorite sets. Hosted at a secluded performing arts summer camp where childhood dreams merge with the music festival culture, the “Chillfam” as Chill’s loving community have coined themselves, bunk-up in 16-32 person sleep away camp-style cabins, creating decorated theme camps intermingled amongst the campers. The festival also features free parking, free camping, daily yoga, live art, a farmer’s market, craft and food vendors, a communal bonfire nightly and an open mic.

Blind Faith tickets are sold out but Early Bird tickets are currently available. Details on VIP Packages, which will be purchased separately from weekend passes, will be announced in the coming weeks.  Tickects are available for purchase HERE

Jean Cornett, co-founder of the Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park passes away

HT Suwannee

The music scene lost a star this week, as Jean Cornett, co-founder of the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, beloved mother, promoter and caretaker to countless music fans has passed away.  She fused her love of family and music into a variety of events, such as her hometown Festival of the Bluegrass and her crowning achievement, Suwannee.  It can truly be said that Miss Jean, as she was known, WAS the spirit in the park’s name.  From her earliest days, she saw how folks were treated at shows, and dreamt of making the experiences better for attendees.  With an indomitable drive, an army of volunteers and well wishers formed around her, inspired by her dedication and selflessness and the trust of the hundreds of musical acts she worked with, Jean Cornett left a legacy on the music scene that will never fade, with generations brought up under her wing.

I had the opportunity to interview her and her husband about their history, their life together and the legacy they have founded.  When a light fades, it’s our duty to shine brighter, and with Miss Jean’s passing we all have a duty to step up and keep her dreams alive.

Rest In Peace.

The fifteenth annual moe.down music festival is happening this weekend in Turin, New York and their fans couldn’t be happier to spend Labor Day weekend with their favorite band and the supporting acts like Lotus, Gogol Bordello and Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang for three days of music mayhem. moe. hails from upstate New York, and the moe.down festival has always served as a “Thank You” to their die hard fans (Known as moe.rons) with a weekend of extra long sets, featuring deeper than usual set lists and fun interactions such as a special performance with the children in attendance and even a joking “Election” for a “Mayor” of the festival itself.

With two side by side stages and no over lapping sets fans can easily see all the bands play without missing a note.  The Saranac Brewery provides a selection of  tasty craft beers, with a wide variety of food vendors, artisans and activist booths give attendees fun shopping opportunities for the rare times there isn’t music playing.  The venue itself is a ski lodge during the winter months, and the stage is set at the bottom of the run, letting the hill serve as a perfect natural stadium incline for great viewing from any angle.

The festival officially starts on Friday, August 29th and runs through Sunday, but a special Thursday entrance upgrade is available for diehards to get in, set up and listen to moe. do a sound check preview of the madness to come!

Tickets are available at the gate and HERE

P.S. Our editor, Rex Thomson, will be on hand not only covering the festival, but also running for Mayor for the fifth time in a row.  Let’s hope he finally breaks his losing streak this year!  Good luck buddy, we’re rooting for you.  VOTE REX!

Victor Wooten opens doors to Wooten Woods

What would cause a teenage boy to speak those words? On Sunday April 5, 2009, you can find out for yourself by visiting Wooten Woods.

Victor Wooten and his wife have recently purchased nearly 150 acres on the beautiful Duck River near Nashville, TN. This will be the new home for the Bass/Nature Camp—a camp they’ve been running since the year 2000.

For the last year, past students and friends have given back to the Wootens and have given forward to future students by donating time, labor, and love to erect the infrastructure of the new camp. By joining the Wootens and their group of instructors over a few weekends, these past students have helped construct buildings, trails, gardens, and much more—all for the purpose of furthering Wooten’s dream of sharing music and nature with people of all ages from around the world.

Over the years, people have come from as far away as Turkey and Australia, Israel and Singapore, England and Brazil to learn from Victor Wooten, whom some call a bass guru.

On Sunday, April 5, you can join in on the fun, music, nature, and more (you may even get to pound in a nail or two.) The time is 1pm – 6pm and the cost is FREE!

Victor Wooten currently maintains an ambitious dual solo/sideman pace, regularly recording and touring with the Flecktones (who have released a dozen albums), Mike Stern and Chick Corea’s Elektric Band. With each new solo CD (six so far), Wooten has expanded his musical focus and knack for genre-uniting via his songwriting, producing and multi-instrumental skills – all while maintaining a stellar level of bass playing. This has never been more evident than on Palmystery, his 2008 release on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group.
