Billed as Return to Forever IV, the latest ensemble of the band that man consider to be a founding voice of the jazz-fusion movement of the 1970s is Chick Corea‘s keyboards, Stanley Clarke‘s bass and Lenny White‘s drums, along with bandleader legend and Mahavishnu Orchestra alum Jean-Luc Ponty on violin and fiery-fingered guitarist Frank Gambale.
However, this coming Thursday at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre — the band that Boston Globe hailed earlier this year as a band that "[takes] an enthusiastic audience back to a time when dazzling musicianship could still land an instrumental group on the pop charts. The band’s rocking encore, showed why [Stanley Clarke] ranked with Jaco Pastorius as a god of the electric bass. Corea, meanwhile, demonstrated why Clarke calls him maestro.” — will also be joined by guitarist, Jimmy Herring (Widespread Panic/Jazz is Dead/Aquarium Rescue Unit) for an unknown number of tunes. It is probably safe to speculate that Herring will be out for a hot minute being that RTF’s songs seemingly have no end and Herring’s heart is firmly in jazz.
With all of this said, Dweezil Zappa’s Grammy award winning effort to bring the music of his dad, Frank, (Zappa Plays Zappa) will also be on the bill.
