What do you get when you put Scott Metzger (Band of Changes, Stanton Moore Trio, Some Cat From Japan), Dave Dreiwitz (Ween), Marco Benevento (Benevento/Russo Duo, Garage A Trois) and Joe Russo (Furthur, Benevento/Russo Duo) into one band? How about when so doing, they play nothing but fully instrumental Led Zeppelin? In short, the sum total is Bustle in Your Hedgerow.

These four guys — all musical powerhouses on their individual instrument — came together in 2004 with only one thing in mind: melting faces. Playing universally known numbers that both stay true to overall compositional form and go in all new directions at the same time is a task that most would not be up to undertaking. However, when one considers the recognition that these lads have received from their peers by being asked to play with everyone from Phil Lesh to Trey Anastasio and beyond, it is no surprise that they are able to not only pull it off, but to dominate it. And the multitudes of fans that flock to see each individual’s projects was not even factored into that equation.

With a guitarist (Metzger) who was told by The Godfather of Soul that his guitar playing is "frightening," a bassist (Dreiwitz) who has resided since 1997 with a band (Ween) that has stood the test of time in spite of a prediction that they would do anything but, an organ player/pianist (Benevento) who did not require a vocalist when performing Phish’s "Foam" at multiple stops with Mike Gordon and eventually GRAB, and a double jointed drummer (Russo) who has now been signed on with Furthur for going on two years performing the duties of arrangements that were originally designed for two drummers— the ensemble is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Unfortunately they do not make the rounds often, usually only hooking up in New York for a one-off here and there when they all find themselves with down time from other projects.

As is par for Honest Tune’s New York coverage, Vernon Webb was there to capture the sights from Bustle in Brooklyn.
