Athfest 2008

Athfest 2008 will be held June 18-22, 2008, in historic downtown Athens, GA, a town long renowned for its thriving music scene.  For the past eleven years, this annual music and arts festival has showcased the best in local, regional, and nationally recognized Athens-based talent.  Over 150 bands and artists will perform over the course of the weekend, with most performances free of charge to the public. The festival also includes a juried artisan market, the Flagpole Music Awards show, KidsFest, and much more.   From 2005-2007, Athfest was included in the “TOP 20 Events for June” by the Southeast Tourism Society.

Each year, Athens-based Ghostmeat Records releases a compilation of local music, primarily of bands that will perform at festival.  Ghostmeat Records founder Russ Hallauer produced this year’s CD, the 11th such release. The CD will feature cover art by Athens artist Catherine Stinson. This year’s edition includes a diverse array of music from 19 Athens artists, 12 of which have never appeared on previous Athfest CDs, with 15 previously unreleased tracks. Artists include: Bicycles and Gravel*, Madeline*, Five Eight*, Kenosha Kid*, Ham1, Perpetual Groove, William Tonks*, Titans of Filth*, Timber*, The Packway Handle Band*, Hope for Agoldensummer*, Dubconscious, Long Legged Woman*, Captain #1*, Dead Confederate*, The Inflatable Orchestra*, Caroline Monroe*, Russian Spy Camera*, and Lona*. The 5th Annual Sprockets Music Video Competition is currently accepting submissions. The videos are screened at the Sprockets Music Video Competition at the 40 Watt on Saturday, June 14th at which time voting takes place for “Best Music Video” and “Audience Choice” awards. The winner of each category is screened during the Flagpole Music Awards. The early deadline for entries is April 1st, and the late deadline is April 15th. For more details, go to

The Flagpole Music Awards will once again be held at the Historic Morton Theatre in downtown Athens on Thursday, June 19th. Awards are given annually for the top artists in various genres, as well as awards for “Album of the Year,” “Album Cover Art,” “Best Up and Coming,” and “Band/Performer of the Year.”
